Bryopsis?

40 gallon fowlr with very light bioload currently... Tank is 3 weeks, maybe 4 old. I used all new sand, and all the 40 lbs of liverock was transferred from my 55, except for 2 pieces which were sterilized dry rock from my LFS. I never had bryopsis in my 55, where did it
come from if it is and how do I get rid of it? No fun, please help...

Doesn't look like bryopsis from the pics. Had to come from the rock. have you tested water and what lighting are you using? Need to know what your water parameters are. Some have had results increasing there mag. level.

Parameters are dead on, except trates are running a little high around 20. I use a Taotronics LED for 9 hours a day, both blues and whites... Phosphates are showing up no doubt because of this algae. If you look close, it is fern like, much like bryopsis, which is why I'm concerned...

If it is bryopsis, Kent marine m is the way to go. Check out my recent treads and you will see where I just got rid of it. This method really works. That picture does not look like bryopsis IMO though.

It might be man, I know mine was a lot darker but Kent marine m works like a charm. I had a terrible outbreak of it, and it is gone now.

Ya picked it up on some rock or coral, and when the time was right, it took off.

Something sparked it to take off. Ya never know what it takes. Or even where you picked it up from. But when you get it, it just ticks ya off badly.

Yea I'll agree with that lol! So Kent M is the way to go huh? Once eradicated, is it gonzo or can it come back?

It can come back, but if you keep your Mg afterwords it seems to stay away from what I've read.

I keep my Mag at 1500. No chance in my tank. Theres an outside chance it couod come back after you let the Mag come back to normal levels.

What is the effect of mag on corals? I intend on turning this into a softie/LPS tank...

you also need to get your "nitrates are running a little high around 20" under control or your going to have a bigger algae problem.

You got it because something in a contaminated tank was introduced to your tank, most likely in the form of Live Rock. This is a really common problem I see in a lot of LFS's and Private Frag Tanks. Kent Tech M was the only thing I found that would kill it off short of killing off your tank and drying everything out and starting over. This is a really tough algae to deal with.

Algae of one sort or another will find a way when conditions are right for it. Kent M as a preventative is just prolonging the inevitable. Ya gotta get to the source of the problem and make the tank less inviting to algae, IME.

Turbo Snails and Lettuce Nudibranchs have been known to help in some cases. May try that before adding chems to the tank?
