I acquired a small candycane colony from a friend back in February before my 55 gal was cycled. I then decided to put it in my 3 yr old 20 gal nano because I figured it had a better chance surviving, (20 gal only has a hob filter and insufficient lighting for lps). Long story short, it didn’t do well.

Here’s a pic of it in the 20

I actually posted a thread about the candycane “dying” and someone recommended me to add it to the 55 since it was done with the cycle and starting the diatom stage.

Here it is after adding it to the 55 (sorry about the picture quality, The pic was originally of the whole tank)

A month or two after adding it to the 55, I noticed that some polyps was starting to recover, as crazy as that sounds. However, vermetid snails started to grow over some of the weaker polyps, causing them to die. (The whole back side of the colony was overran with them)

After an unsuccessful attempt of removing the vermetids, I decided to frag the remaining 3 healthy polyps and made sure that they had no vermetids.

Since then, all of the frags have been growing a fair amount and almost seem to have new heads everyday.

I agree, I was looking at viparspectra black boxes for awhile. I’m going to add t5 fixture before adding harder corals.

I’m also using a t8 fixture along with the marineland strip light.

There isn’t any real reasons other than the fact that the tank was just too narrow for what I pictured. I wanted to achieve a more complex aquascape since I ended up buying a lot of rock. Basically, I wanted to have swimming room in the front along with the taller aquascape that will allow certain corals to grow closer to the light.

I never really measured it, but If I had to guess, I would say that the central disc is about 1.5 inches in diameter and the legs are at least 8in long.
