hi there i’m new to the hobby & was just wondering if it’s normal for my BTA to be closed up like this from time to time since i only got him a few days ago. i have a smaller one that’s doing fine & got a bigger one to add to my tank as well. first photo is when it’s fully open, oh and my clownfish says hi!

How long has the tank been setup for? Anyway swings in parameters? Mine do this from time to time.

Its normal.mine closes opens time to time .once it looked like it melted .only thing you got to keep an eye if its send out white stuff are the signs for diying anomone .

I posted a few months Ago .my anomone look good now .it try to grab a picsand Update my post ad well.

i get my lfs to test it often because i don’t have a good test kit yet for the parameters but just before i got him my water was perfect. it’s been set up for around two months.

it is releasing the slightest bit of clear stringy slime stuff but not much & my other one did that after i got him as well so i wasn’t too worried & it is also releasing some zooxanthellae i believe. so i’m hoping it’s still just adjusting cause i think he finally settled on a spot & also because the other one is doing great.

I would keep an eye out on it end make sure everything stays stable with no swings a water change wouldn’t hurt either.

how much do you suggest for a water change? i haven’t done one yet, cause i haven’t had to. so i’m not sure. i have a 24 gal tank if it helps

Yes exactly .I think it's still adjusting. Mine keeps on move. But the next day its it the same spot .il try to find picture which show when anomone is dying but keep an eye on it.

Are you using RODI water?
Rule of thumb is 10% / week or 20% every other week.
It's really hard to keep all of your parameters in check including pollutants from unknown sources. It's a good habit to keep and increases your chances of long-term success.

i had my saltwater come straight from the tanks from my lfs. salinity has stayed at 1.026 since then & all my parameters have been spot on so far so i haven’t had to do a water change (so i thought) & i haven’t had to top off my water yet but i will be using rodi water when i do a water change soon & yes i should definitely get in the habit of it

Keep up the great work, the BTA is a bit..ch, always been and always will be (at least mine is), lol they act up and close, next day it's the best thing you have ever seen. Then the next day back to being a B....it's a roller coaster ride, but amusing too.

Ohhh and welcome to R2R fellow Canadian Reefer

If just one is closed up and the other is fine, he's settling into the new environment and water. He'll probably inflate and expel a few times til he feels "balanced"

He's trying to make the water inside his body the same with the water outside, sometimes because they can only do this by inflating and deflating water they have to do it a few times to get everything expelled properly.

I always try to test the water they come in before I add them to get an idea of what they're used too. Won't change anything I do, but at least give me and idea if what he's used to greatly varies from what I'm keeping.

BTA's are super hardy and since you've got another healthy one already he'll be just fine just give him a little time to settle.
