Had a rough weekend with my ~5 month old 120. Long story short I accidentally killed my thriving BTA by lifting a rock I didn't think it was attached to. I tore its foot badly and it didn't recover. I had the nem for about 3 months and it has tripled in size and was loving life.
So I went out and got a new one yesterday. I placed it in the same spot, albeit removing a rock to make sure that history didn't repeat itself. I checked in on it last night about 10:00, an hour after lights went out and it was still there. It wasn't bubbled up yet but that was to be expected. I woke up this morning at 6:00 and checked the tank and it was no where to be found. I left for work thinking that maybe it was hiding and would come out as the lights gained intensity, but I just got home and it is still no where to be found. I have taken a flashlight and looked everywhere possible and I really don't think its in the tank. I do have a lot of rock work and I'm sure it "could" be in there, but I just have a bad feeling. The weird thing is, even this morning, is that there is no trace of it. If it got sucked into a power head I think there would at least be some residual meat hanging off the power heads. When i feed there's some chunks of frozen that can get hung up on a powerhead screen for a few hours. There was nothing, no bits floating around the tank, none that got hung up on rocks, and everything else looks fine. My parameters are in order, including 0 Ammonia and 0 Nitrite. I'm hoping you good people could tell me that they have had a new BTA hide for a period of time and he will show back up, but I am worried. Killing my first BTA was bad enough, but I didn't even get to see this one fully open up :( Is it possible that it did get sucked into a powerhead in the middle of the night and disintegrated before I looked this morning? Wouldn't there be at least some sign of this, even if my corals looked stressed? I have a Crocea clam as well, and the old canary in the coal mine Duncan that never missed a beat. I'd just baffled and frusterated.

It's probably squished up in between your rock work somewhere.

New BTAs love to hide. I can't tell you how many "dissapeared" for a few weeks or more then showed up again. I would confirm it's not in your overflow/sump if you have one, otherwise it's likely underneath a rock where you can't see it right now. It's possible that it got snagged by the powerhead, but if I was betting, my money is that it's between two rocks right now. You'll likely do more damage trying to find it.

Thanks, I hope you're right. I checked my overflow and its not there. I'm glad to hear they can disappear for a few weeks and show back up, it gives me home. After killing my first one, I'm definitely not going to be pulling rocks out looking for it.

When you say disappeared, could it have been in an area with no light and survived that long? If mine is alive in my tank I am almost certain that it isn’t in a lit area. How long could it stay there before it has to come out for photosynthesis or die?

Yup- they went into dark areas for weeks at a time and were just fine. Often they're trying to acclimate to your lighting/flow. It will come out in time - they're good about not accidentally kill themselves by moving into dark areas :)

You know I didn’t not believe you, but I had given up hope that mine was in the tank. It made my day today when I came home and found that he made his way out and looks really good. What fascinating creatures.
I wanted to update this incase anyone finds this in the future. I looked everywhere I possibly could for this one and he was no where I could see without moving rocks. He showed back up after just a few days.

Don't worry, this won't be the last time your nem is "troublesome". Glad it's decided to show up again!

What a drama queen this anemone is. I first saw him about 3:00 yesterday. At about 7:00 I was positive I was watching him die for reasons unknown. He was sucked in, deflated and his mouth was gaping and it looked like he was throwing up his insides. I almost pulled it out last night. Well this morning his mouth is closed and he’s a lot more inflated. My lights are just getting going but he looks 100% better than yesterday. What a roller coaster of emotions

I went to work yesterday and had 1 RBTA, woke this morning to 2.
I’d be happy just to have the 1. I did have a real nice one and it was super happy until I accidentally killed it. This one seems super temperamental. It has been hiding again since my white lights came on
