I am going to try to keep a BTA happy in one spot, and would like some feedback on my plan. i intend to do this by giving it a good rock with lots of holes to attach to, controlling the flow around it, and isolating the rock from everything else by using several (strong, coated Neodymium) magnets to suspend it to the top 1/3 of the tank

Background:
So, I intend to get a BTA soon. This will be my first ‘nem. I want it to keep to a certain part of the tank, namely up and away from the other things in the tank (the top 3rd of the tank rarely has anything in it, anyway).

The BTA I have in mind is a bout 1”, when curled up in itself.

The plan is:

- use a good piece of rock, with lots of small holes, small bumps, and the like for it to attach to.

- attach the rock to the top 1/3 of the tank with 3-4 strong magnets.

- put the rock above a powerhead, so that flow is below and up for the nem

- have the rock fairly close to a Kessil 360

See the attached rough drawing.

Is this a reasonable plan? Do you think it will work?

Probably not, they go where they want to go.
Also they like crevices and have their foot wedged into the rock work. usually two rocks bonded together with a nice void inside would be ideal.
Top 1/3 is where it will likely settle, but they generally aclimate themselves over a period if a couple of weeks.

Do you have a lot of other corals in your tank at the moment?

Mine have taken the grand tour of my tank since adding them. Luckily, it’s a nem only tank so they can wander to their hearts content. One actually reached across a 3-4” gap in between my two rock islands to get to the other side of the tank.

You might be able to keep it isolated on the rock you sketched but if it’s really not liking its location, it will release fully and float to a new spot, likely to get sucked into a pump or overflow before finding a rock.

I was lucky my BTA stayed where i out it. Best advise is turn off your power heads out it in the spot you like and jooe the NEM likes it as much as you do. Those suckers love to walk around. Here is my NEM.

Have you not just got that?
Where abouts in the tank is it?

I would expect the anemone to completely disregard your plan and head straight for your Power heads. They have a tendency to do that.

People have lots of different experiences with anemones staying in place, and then deciding to take hike after a few years. Or anemones that just wander periodically.

I would say make sure there is a large hole in that rock which it can completely shrink into, other than that I wouldn’t expect it to stay there for long.

I hope it works out for you though, and definitely let us know what happens! :)

My NEM is in the about mid range in the tank, i have 2 gyre 250s in the tank. I lowered the percentage for a few hours to let it settle. The pumps r up to 70% now its gets med high flow .

It might decide one day it wants more light. See if it's still in the same place this time next month.

ETA: here's a picture of the rock in question. It's now on the sandbed, though if I go through with this I will again mount it towards the top 1/3 of the tank (again, with a powerhead UNDER the rock).

Do people still think that a BTA won't like this rock?

(apologies about my current cyano battle. ;Bored Cyano will need to be gone before I add the BTA)

It's a little difficult to get the scale of some of those holes.

I would say you want a void in the rock around the size of a lemon, but the opening slightly smaller.

I would probably be inclined to take a hammer and chisel to that rock and create a void by piecing it back together using miliput.

My nems always like to retreat into their little caves at night. I guess it makes them feel safe.

Do you want me to post some pics of where mine are?

True. The rock is about 8 inches long.

But yes, i would appreciate that. :)

This is a bubble tip, his tenticles just aren't bubbly today and this isn't anything to worry about when you get yours.

You can see his foot and the hole/void he retreats into at night. Hope this gives you an idea of what I mean.

Love your plan but not even NASA could get the Nemn to stay in place lol....

I have mine in a cup then a rock with it. He attached to the rock and I was like YES! Next week he moved in may spots .. Nothing I can control. He will do what he wants. Just yesterday he came out up front.
