Bubba's SPS Journey

You do anything to it or just time?
Every night he whispered sweet nothings to it and took it for a walk weekly ( it needs it’s excercise or it gets grumpy and brown) that worked for a little while but what really put it over the top was when Bubba told it it was nothing like his other corals because it was in fact a turd of the coral it used to be almost instantly it turned pink and started to glow in the dark
Lil reverse physiology worked wonders on this coral

Bubba, for your frag tanks, how long did you set them up before loading them with sps? Did you use any liverock? Any details on frag tanks?
All my frag tanks went the ugly phase even though they are all plumbed into my display. As soon as that phase passed I loaded them up with coral. The two lowboy tanks don’t have any rock but the big tub frag tank has a few pieces of rock in the very ends of it.

Gotcha. For some reason, I thought I remember reading you had 1 or 2 frag tanks that were not plumbed into the main system.

As per usual I am not surprised by the quality of pure acro spectacularness that we get from you!! Glad to hear you and your family survived the flu and hopefully everyone is feeling better too mate :)

Love this information. I've been trying to tell this to people forever and a day, people seem very reluctant.

Here's some info for those interested---

An excellent read on algae nutrient uptake. In the early 2000's Caulerpa was the the dominant algae of choice for Sps keepers. No one had issues with limiting factors, as can be seen in the article it does a more balanced job for what a tank needs than chaeto.

I don't know if gracilaria is the same as the red algae you all are talking about but it's a better candidate than chaeto keeping a balanced ratio as well.

If you go and look back at a lot of the TOTM most algae filters had a mix of various macro algae.

Here's a table showing some of the trace metal uptakes from algae. These are some of the elements reefers seem wanting to dose now a days if you don't do water changes. The algae is competing with the corals for these elements.

I am going to have an issue very soon. When I first put the Paletta pink tip there the PC superman was not even close to it but over time the PC Superman has grown over it. Now the Pc superman just about completely shades it and if the Paletta pink tip keeps growing up it will grow right into the bottom of the superman.

Challenge of introducing kalkwasser is you have to completely re tune the calcium reactor
Took me 2-3 days. I just turned down the CO2 a little bit on the CaRX and dosed fully saturated kalk solution via ATO. Then watched my alk and tuned it in a couple days. Not too terrible.

Should have cut me a bigger frag of the SM then!

I’m actually considering switching to more dragonsbreath as it looks nicer and grows fairly fast for me.

What sticks out to me most is this last part;

People are moving towards a zero water change mentality, while stubbornly refusing to acknowledge that Macro has needs. This clashing mentality means they are falling short on trace elements, that WILL impact corals eventually. The problem is it can take a long time depending on a bunch of factors, so people have trouble connecting dots 6 months apart.

I can't tell you how many friends I've had who were destroying their tanks because they wouldn't take care of their Macro. It's a slow degradation, but it can, and will, wreak havoc on SPS.

Its not too bad. Usually the increase in growth from higher ph almost matches the added alkalinity from kalk.

lol, I thought I gave you a nice frag of it. Your frag actually came from me cutting it trying to make the pink tip not grow into it but the Superman just grows back.

I haven’t had any issues yet but I do small water changes and run a calcium reactor, which may help with elements.
