My refugium is out of control. In the last year since starting the tank my sump had been a matter of frustration regarding nuisance everything.
I’ve gotten the hair algae under control using nutrients control and small amounts of carbon.
My rocks continue to get covered in red bubble algae and aiptasia. I remove rocks, sun bleach, return and covered within a couple moths again. I’ve attempted using emerald crab, peppermint shrimp, Manila removal, aiptasia X. It’s a never ending battle.
Recently I’ve noticed that ever increasing amount of different types of snail like critters that do not have shells, maybe nudibranches. They come out in what seems like armies at night. I can’t count them there’s so many.
What I would love to do is remove everything in the refugium and start over-but that doesn’t seem possible after 14 months and such a well stocked display.
So my questions are as follows:
1. Is it ever successful tearing out an established sump and installing a new one while a mixed reef tank is operating?
2. How much Live Rock can I remove before it’s going to seriously effect my reef tank?
3. If I take the rock out will it even be effective due to the 2.5 inch sand bed?
4. How do I reduce so many nutrients and still have my corals thrive?
I’d like to redo the sump. I bought it used and the baffles and where equipment is located is not ideal. Overflow into refugium, no socks, over baffle, no media, into return area that holds 10” reef octopus slimmer, mag 18 and maxi jet supply to carbon reactor.
All the new sump designs are laid out much better than this old point of sale. How not crash my tank and at the same time remove all these pests at the same time.
