So my Tank is almost two years old. It finally seems that everything is starting to really go well. Corals are growing my sps colors are really starting to come out. My levels are stable and overall very happy with everything (excluding a rouge BTA). But now I have a small amount of bubble algae. I do feed reef roids/fuel/marine snow once a week at the suggested amount maybe even less. I run gfo and carbon as well. I also have a small UV 3watt. My Tank is only 28gal.
I have read many dif stories of dealing with bubble algae and I honestly don’t know what is best. I am actually scared of trying anything and screwing up what has finally started to run smoothly. I have read about vibrant/manual removal/and emerald crabs. With vibrant I have read that the corals don’t like it and it can create a huge bio load shift. And with manual/emerald crabs I have read they will pop the bubble and spread the algae. And if I stop feeding the Tank corals may revert. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Hydrogen peroxide! Use a small syringe and squirt the algae while in the tank. It won’t hurt anything except the bubble algae. It will just go translucent and disappear over several days. Don’t need too much but good coverage of the bubbles. Have done it twice, 30 cube and then my 90 reef. It’s all gone for over a year.

I have done a hydrogen peroxide dip and scrub when my rocks were covered in hair algae and it worked out great. Really turned the tide on the war of GHA. Would you squirt it into the bubble or just turn off the filter, spray on top of the algae, wait 5min and turn filter back on? Would you feel confident doing this right next to zoa/polyps?

I use Emerald crabs. But they are hit or miss, some eat it like popcorn, while others outright ignore it.

Good luck,

Jim

Iv'e done this & it worked for me. Turn off the pumps. let water still & slowly squirt the h2o2 over the bubble try not to create any current. Pull the rock out if you can, much easier that way. As for close to corals just take care not to get too much on the coral. The bubble algae poll is a good source !

Ok you need a sailfin tang. My tank was covered in bubble algae when I got it (didn’t know what it was at the time). I was contemplating bleaching the tank, and saw a fellow reefer say sailfins work. I put one in and within minutes (no exaggeration) he was swimming around eating all the bubbles he could find. 100% best solution, I haven’t had bubble algae in months thanks to wu-tang the sailfin tang. Hope this helps
