I have been in the hobby for about 12 years. Since day 1 I have been told that popping bubble algae releases spores and makes the problem worse. Today I heard that was a myth and popping them is no big deal. So, fact or myth?

John

I am in the myth category. I have manually removed bubble algae, turned off flow, let the algae settle out and then siphon the pieces out. I never saw a noticeable increase in the algae presence afterwards. If conditions are favorable bubble algae is going to grow.

not sure but i seem to have more everytime i try to get them out i have to be more careful

myth imo because crabs eat them by breaking them and were touted as the cure for them by actually getting results in stat significant # of tanks.

theres neat timelapse footage of a crew ridding a tank on ytube
Once a long time ago on reefcentral a marine plant biologist linked me somewhere that showed the vacuole only has reproductive duties on a rare basis, most of the time its water and cellular inclusions not related to reproduction though I cant recall the details.

we classify Valonia as one of the top three invasive plant risks for a tank...requiring surgery for ideal removal. chipped off the rock, universal control. anything shy is not worth the risk. reef excision surgery 100% fact it works. I documented doing it in my tank on page six ish of the p thread here. high def scraping of rock/siphon out

hesitation causes valonia invasions not ever nutrients :)

still stand by the claim that hesitation is the sole cause and not nutrients of every reef invader just shy of cyanobacteria and a few recurring types of green algae, and that preemptive surface-abrading rasping will arrest 98% of tank invasions and can be proven unique to the tank in question by using a test section.

Im gonna say myth, mainly cause I had about four areas of this stuff. Nothing too crazy yet, of the 20 bubbles I pulled about five or six had popped. This was about 8 months ago and have not seen any new bubbles.
