so i have been in this hobby for over 3 years and the one thing i see alot on this forum or on facebook groups is the thought process that if you burst the bubble it will spread..

The consensus goes both ways and the logic sometimes baffles me. Crabs don't eat them whole...i even had a argument with someone saying that crabs eat them whole or they only eat ones that pop for the fact the spores are mature enough where it does not spread..

it drives me crazy!

The latest I've heard is that they don't spread when popped, but I can't recall if I read that from a reputable source or not.

I always heard it was rhizomatic so it will spread from a “mother” colony and bud off. Which makes sense to me based o. The way it seems to grow in clumps.

I think the thought of is spreading by popping the bubble would be from pieces of a popped piece landing somewhere and continuing to spread but not spores per say.

I dont think anyone really knows the answer since an official study on that has not been done that I can find. I have bubble algae in my tank but my Clown and Assasi triggers love to eat it so there isn't any visible. When I move a rock or coral that has bubble algae on it that the triggers can't get to they immediately swim over to the rock or coral in my hand and eat any bubble algae thats on it then they swim over to where the rock or coral was and eat all the bubble algae that was concealed.

I have read it does not spread that if you find a spot that you thought it spread it was actually already there but could not see it..
