Any thoughts on just smothering the green bubbles with epoxy ? would that work ?

Not sure as long as you didn't burst the bubbles, maybe. Bursting the bubbles would cause them to spread. I'm not advocating it but I have had really good results using Vibrant reef cleaner. I had bubble algae all over and have been dosing twice a week for a month and half. Most of my bubble algae is gone and I haven't seen any side effects. Just my experience.
