Hi Jeremy,

Last night my skimmer pump started smoking left a black film in the sump and popped the breaker.
Any thoughts as to what happened? Never went dry, no power problems.

Sounds like something may have got caught in the shaft or something is leaking voltage in the sump. I would remove the impeller and inspect it for the source of the issue.
