Hi, I was hoping to get an IDEA on a colony of palythoa I have. I’ve not seen anything like them before and no one seems to be able to Id them for me.
Many thanks.

aside form just confirming that it seems to be some kind of paly, I'd say that the bubbling in the skirt is likely an anomaly caused by over exposure to light. Is it fair to assume that they're under different lights now vs what they were under ten years ago? You see similar results in various mushrooms when they've been over exposed to certain types of light. Some people have even had the bubbling phenomenon show up in chalices. If you're looking for a "trade name" you could google around until you find something, or give it a name that you like.

Thanks for replying, yes they are under LEDs for the last year or so, having been under T5s before that.
Funnily my rhodactis bounce mushroom has lost all its bubbles and it’s a lot closer to the lights, and now just looks normal.
If you look at pic coloey you’ll notice the crowded ones seem to bubble more than the exposed ones, I assumed the opposite of what you say and thought perhaps it was lack of light and they were using the bubbles to increase surface area.
You think they are doing it to shade themselves.
I have searched a lot and I can’t find a single pic or article about this.
They were a horrid brown colour when I found a couple of polyps growing on a piece of lr. I kept them and let them grow and gave them a site and they turned into this. Talk about ugly duckling :)

the ones near the center of the colony are, at least I think it's fair to guess, the oldest so have had the longest exposure. Perhaps this is a response to try to shade themselves from the lighting, there's still a lot of conjecture out there as to why corals do this even that it's some form of coral cancer, and it's really odd that the shroom lost its bubbled up vesicles. Isn't it cool when you pick up what appears to be a dud then get it under some better lights and it turns into something awesome?!

To be honest I’m shutting down my tank and looking to sell most things. Had it for 15 years now but with a new baby on the way I won’t have time (or money) for hobbies anymore.

congratulations on the coming kiddo! Sorry to hear you're shutting the tank down, but, kids get priority. Good luck with everything!
