definitely will do, since I posted this hes moved and looks a lot better

Thank you! When I'm adding salt should I have to worry disturbing the other things in the tank?

Hi.

Are you talking about adding salt to existing water or via higher salinity saltwater?

occasionally, about once a month

When it comes to water quality, you goal should be stability. When you do monthly water changes, you are allowing for greater swings in your water parameters. Your Nitrates may climb to 30 over the course of the month. Then when you do your water change, they may drop to 10. So over the course of 1 month, you are getting 20 point swings in Nitrates.

When doing the water changes weekly, those swings may only be 5 points.

My preference would be to have Nitrates sit consistently at 30 than to have 20 point swings.

so change my water weekly to avoid dramatic change?

yes, the way I've been doing it is taking out a stein of water, adding salt to it, stirring it in till dissolved, then pouring it back in

quick update: after posting this I've increased the salinity and my bta has moved and reopened, if anyone has any light suggestions or ways to just all around increase my tank quality I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks again to all who responded!
ps does anyone know how to make edits to posts? I'm very slow lol

Exactly.

(1) 5 gallon Home Depot bucket sized water change weekly is enough for your setup. Also, as has already been mentioned, I would take a toothbrush to your rock and a razor to your glass first. Get all of the green hair algae circulating in the water column and THEN do the water change.

What kind of filtration outside of a weekly water change do you employ? Any carbon? A filter sock or any filter pads?

Can't comment on results yet, because I just got it, but I got this and put it in my sump and run it every other day or so for a little while.... sometimes a couple hours, sometimes I toss it on for 6-8 hours...... You can't put it where fish are though:

It was so cheap, I thought "What the heck?"

How is your water flow and what is your current Nitrate.nitrite and PH reading?

If you can, post a full tank pic to allow us to help you assess any issues noticeable

I use all of those, I can try to send a pic of my system a little later
