So I recently got another nem from a friend who got one from a coworker a few years ago. I set his first tank up for him and a bout a year later he got this nem. Never got an id on it but it’s orange with pink tips. So anyways he messaged me one day asking if it was ok cuz it split at like 2” inside when fully open. Seemed weird to me and I asked him to keep an eye on it. A week later he asked if I wanted one. I said sure. I went over, grabbed it and that was it. About 6 months in my tank and it split again. Again the thing wasn’t very big. About 3” this time. A few things happened after that. I got out of the hobby for a few years. That brings us to now. I got back in to it and that gave him the added drive to want a 90 gallon reef ready. So we started discussing and I agreed to build it for him and get corals together for it. As part of the deal I was to get one of the same nems. He had 2 at this point, I went over to grab it and took the easier one to grab which happened to be the bigger one. Got it home put it in a cup in my tank to keep it in place.

Now for the real question. I knew the thing would split and I’d have a few nems but I didn’t know when. Yesterday I went down to look at the tank after the lights came on and was surprised to see it splitting. I was like ok cool I have another nem now. Well on my way to bed I shined a light on it and it didn’t split just twice but three times. I messaged my friend and he said his was splitting also. My question is why at such a small size is this thing splitting so much? Why has it never grown to full size? Is there a type of bubble tip that matures at a small size? What’s causing them to split so frequently, my water is stable parameters are excellent. There’s no stress from fish as I only have a jawfish and watchman in the tank. Same with his tank. It’s always just split at a small size.

So anemones split for 2 reasons. First is to reproduce and carry on the species. This usually happens when they get a certain size and they feel like that's a good place to start a colony. This is usually when there is a good food supply, and water conditions are optimal. Second is in time of danger when they feel threatened or the water quality isnt to the standard they want, they will split rapidly to try and make survival rates better. In your case i would lean towards there is something in the water that isnt making them comfortable.

On that note, How old is your tank and what are your parameters?

my tanks about 4 months old. This is my first reef back since taking a 2 year break. I’m comfortable enough adding a nem so early Bc I watch my tank like a hawk. I feed it every other day which is probably why it split so early. It hasn’t tried to travel. I also have 2 mini maxis in my tank too. There always so full looking.

I would watch them. May be a little shock of the new system. If they stay healthy than you shouldn't worry about it. Nems can we weird sometimes.

Hard to say but I'd happily take one or two off your hands if you'll ship them to me.
