I'm using the f14 fishmate with an usb-aa battery.

About once a month I have to take the wheel out and wipe with a cloth because some flake turn to powder. About 30$ total from Amazon.

Edit. Had to make a small notch in the battery cover for the power cable.

Edit 2. If I was to do it again, I'd just get this

We're using these on a number of tanks, they work great and are dead easy to program!

Interesting. That looks a lot like a miniature version of a pill dispenser I recently set up for an elderly relative
That's hilarious, I was typing up a pre post this morning for later on about using this to dispense pills. Was planning on buying some HPMC capsules in the near future. Wether or not it gums up with flake/pellets/powders, I'll find out..

The Fishmate F14 auto feeder has an issue where fish flake grinds up and leaves dust inside the unit. To avoid this, why not encapsulate the food?

The auto feeder has 23mm (diagonally) x 12mm tall slots, meaning I should be able to use size 0 (21.7mm x 7.65mm) or smaller capsules.

That should work especially since is dumping out the bottom. Gel type capsules can be problematic on the pill dispenser as they want to stick but gravity should help on the feeder since it dumps vs having to be removed from the top.
