I don't think any of the tamron or sigma macro lenses will auto focus with the d40. I don't know if that is important to you.

Have you investigated extension tubes? They tend to be cheaper because there are no optics

Cheapest method with good reviews are the kinko extension tubes, my brother uses them on his Canon and it takes good shots...

And autofocus is not needed with macroing... But that is from what I have read...

intresting.... i'm following this. I have a D5000X and looking for a macro lense but not wanting to pay 2 times the amount of the cost of the camera for 1 lense at the moment.

Not sure your price ranges but the Sigma 105mm 2.8/f EX Macro is between $400 - $500. Great investment. Your going to pay around $75-$100 for nice extension tubes. Wait a few weeks, save the extra money and get the macro. You won't regret it.

I would have to wait months, maybe more to spend $500 more. So I was hoping to find something a bit cheaper.

Hmm, I looked it up. The tamron now comes with a built in autofocus motor. So it will work with the d40. I think I have the old version which will not autofocus on a d40.

If you want a quality lens in a budget you can buy a used Nikon 105mm F2.8 Ai-s Manual Focus Lens. The lens was used in film cameras. You will have no auto focus and no mettering. With some trial and error using the LCD display you will find the correct exposure.

I have this lens and use it with my D60 and my macros are sharp! It is known as being one of the sharpest lenses Nikon have ever made. Designed to focus close for macro work right down to 1:1.

The good thing is that I purchased mine in very good condition at ebay for $185. You will have to watch for deals in this lens since good offers will appear only from time to time.
