I run mine with just filter floss and live rock these days. It's a smaller tank, 12 gallon. I do have a media reactor for "emergencies" and a small UV, but really you can run decent sized tanks without a skimmer, media tumbler, etc. The biggest cost is the lighting in my opinion. While I do not own one, I believe a coral life biocube is basically plug and play and sub 300 dollars (sub 400 for the bigger 32). If I could find one used that would be a great budget tank me thinks. I'm not crazy about being married to the hood but for a softies tank I think it would be just fine.

I try to do things on a budget (bought entire tank setup new by watching craigslist and my local hobby club), and there are many others out there on a budget, too.
Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)

WELL, IF YOU MUST KNOW...HEART ATTACKS, OUT OF COUNTRY WORKING..LIFE GETS IN THE WAY OF LIFE SOMETIMES AND I AM JUST GETTING BACK INTO THE HOBBY...SO, I WILL BE WORKING ON A 20 GAL BUDGET TANK, A NUVO 20, SOMETHING THAT WONT REQUIRE AN ABUNDANE OF ATTENTION, JUST ME SITTING IN FRONT OF IT SIPPING MY WINE.So, you've been here 6 years and only just got around to posting something here?
