Hi all,
I am returning to reefing after a brief stint away (2017).
Work, unfortunately, got very much in the way over the past few years and after a tropical storm hit, leaving us without power for many days, unfortunately, we released the fish/corals into the ocean and dismantled and binned the small reef we had established a few years prior.
I've been reefing since 2009, prior to that was into Malawi Cichlids.
However pre 12' was in the UK, and post 12' in Asia, over the past few years we've got ourselves into a position of the final wrap up of our main residence, and this includes a 'new bedroom, with bathroom' which will be built at the other end of our pool away from the main property, we are also green (solar) with a secondary power reserve (batteries) then a third (generator), followed by the grid (phase one for main, phase 3 for home office).
At the moment (rainy season) avg 12kw a day, with the new bedroom, we will be doing concept style with Balinese teak roof, with flat concrete sitting either side, which would enable us to add an additional array of solar panels (4x400w) which will / should, in theory, provide the additional electricity alongside the existing 12x400w panels to power the reef set up.
I did consider having a glass window above where I intend to have the reef, but unsure of the pros and cons of utilising natural light in a reef zone opposed to managed/automated lighting etc.
The intention is to have the tank through the wall, a small 'fish room' in the bedroom, and have everything required to run it *automated* in there with it, and anything that can't be fit in there piped to the pool room where there is more than enough room if needs be.
Ideally what I am looking forward to on here, is engaging in discussions around the changes that have happened in the technological area of reefing (predominantly since 2012) as we travel considerably, and although this is our main residence in the region, it's not the only one so we could be gone for a week at a time, we could also be in other areas of the world for a month or two.
So ideally we are looking to automate just about anything we can, and the pool girl can handle the remaining things if they're not too pressing, mind Corona may have locked down for another 6 months it appears anyway
I've attached a proposed area for the bedroom which is represented red area of building capability, green most likely outer side of the building, purple internal side, the reef room rould be the left side (little room) with a hole in the wall for the tank from the bedroom, the right side (divided by the long purple like at the 60% point will be a bathroom etc.
Currently, we are in discussions with our architect who is designing things, unfortunately too early to post anything reference their work, as still in the discussion phase, the second image is a rough sketch layout which kinda gives an idea.
I'd appreciate the following.
:- Any advice reference hardware *automation*, essentials (pumps, blowers, sump set ups, etc)
Also references from others that have gone through similar setups/builds and documented the fun.
