Im looking to put (6) deep blue 80g tanks on a 6ft by 14ft stand 3.5ft tall, i dont know how to go about building the stand, the tank is in the basement so weight is not an issue although it has to be built down there due to space constraints of the staircase, also planning to put an 8x4x2 sump under it, how should i start?

Plenty of stand build threads. Just copy one of those and scale it to size.

Weld a steel frame together. Bolt the sections together once in the basement? Otherwise I think there are some threads about laminated plywood stands that I would reference. I think, IMHO, those would be stronger than the standard 2x4 style stands.

I would use a modified RocketEngineer plan. They are just 80g tanks. If you use a 2x6 top frame, you can probably get away with a upright brace (leg) every other tank width. If you use 2x4's, I'd go with legs between each tank. The downside to that will be possibly difficult access to the sump.

find someone with a jointer and planer so that you can square up the always somewhat crappy 2x's. That will make the job of constructing a level and planar stand so very much easier. Use pocket hole screws and glue. If the stand will be completely open (no skin) I'd use braces in the corners to prevent racking.

What you are thinking about is really a pretty simple job. If you are unsure of your skills, perhaps find another local reefer to help.

Good Luck, and PICTURES PLEASE!!!
