So, what size spacing do you want with egg crates to make racks?
White or Black?
Can I attach PVC legs to the bottom of the racks to raise them up 2in to put a power head underneath? If so could I cut the legs and drill a hole and zip tie the legs to the egg crate?
If I have a 12in tank how far off the bottom should I have the egg crate?

Have you ruled out a hang on shelf? That's what we did back in the day. Takes up a lot less valuable space.

I have superglued PVC to the rack. Found that just using couplers worked well since they are uniform in size.

Yes to all your questions. I prefer black but it costs more and is typically harder to find. Frag tank?
I'd go no more than 1-2" in a 12" deep tank but depends on lights, corals and what you are trying to do.

I have this tank, also have a xr30 blue on it. Planning to do over half of the tank with like 1 frag rack like at a fish store. So it’ll probably be 24x16 inches and the tank is a 36x18in tank

Any particular reason why? You like the look? I really prefer a more natural look. But I have been thinking of a more "industrial" style of a tank with egg crate and lots of PVC, kind of like a frag tank that got forgotten and the corals just grew out.

so this tank is really short and funny enough I got this whole setup minus the light for 50 bucks the other day. And I have a 55g and a 180g up and going and my 55 is super overgrown and I can’t fit frag racks in there. Also I don’t like the look of frag racks in a display so I can trim off my colony’s and let them heal in this tank and trade or sell them.

Biggest reason for the egg crate and store style if just ease of set it and forget it and not have to worry of getting it before it encrust on a rock and I have to sell my rock too. Also not having to sit it in the sand bed and fish and inverts love knocking them over and burying them which is darn annoying because I’ll forget
To get it and once I get to it, half is dead of not getting light.

I have a 12" frag tank. I went with black egg crate (BRS 2' x 2' cut down and sanded sharp edges) and I like it a lot. I went with 2" height and I am happy with that. I got 3D printed feet from Etsy, I think. I like the egg crate because I feel like it allows more flow than some other type of racks. I have a gyre above and have a lot of backflow underneath.

so one gyre and only above the frag rack blowing on the corals?

Yes, frag tank is 30" x 20", I have a single IceCap 2k on the top left and there is a pretty strong current right to left underneath the egg crate. I run the gyre well below 50% total output.
