I am posting on behalf of my boss, who is currently picking up his new custom aquarium with a built in over flow.
The over flow box is glass with a black piece of acrylic with teeth. The black piece the water flows through is separate right now, and he was wondering:

1. does he need to mount it to the over flow with silicone, postponing his plans to upgrade today?

is there any other options? such as using the plastic screws that would be used on an external overflow for adjustment? would those stay secure?

HELP US OUT GUYS!
his new fish tank is laughing at him after his months of preparation

the bottom

OK, good, usually the overflow is glued in with silicone.. but you say it hasn't been glued in, so that leaves some questions. Could you shoot some pictures and post them? It may be important. We could advise you wrong without a picture to look at.

they're still on their way back from picking it up :/
I will do when they arrive.

they said the glass was glued in for the box itself, just not the black acrylic piece with the teeth

This may be an easy fix and answer, but I do need a picture or two of the glass insert and black piece together so I can get a perspective of size and such.

i apologize about the pictures, they're still in the truck making their way back.

Good, one more pic please.. back off and get the tank with the overflow in the back. I can't get a grip on where and how it is located.

Still send the picture, but I think I see where it is.
Here is the deal:
Some people like to just leave the glass overflow as is. Some want the black strainer, YOU DO. It should fit around the over flow snug. When it is all the way to the bottom the slots should end just barely above or even with the top of the glass over flow box. You do want to silicone this all the way around to the glass box for keeps. I want to see the picture to make sure I am correct.

OK, may be good enough. Do what I said. If the black part does not go all the way down to the bottom, go by the slots being the same height as the glass overflow. The black part does two things, >hide the down flow and up flow tubes, >provide a strainer so fish, snails, etc don't get into the overflow box.

I meant the bottom of the slots being the same height as the top of the overflow box.

Perfect. Do like I said and he will be fine. There is no adjustment to make the glass box is already designed at the correct height. Be sure to clean out the silicone from the slots.. and it doesn't have to be glued as if it has to hold water. Just glued enough to keep dirt, sand, bacteria, etc out from between it and the glass. The glass box will be full of tank water up to the height of the overflow tubes that will come up from the bottom in those large two holes.
