Here is the bigger issue; that clownfish is breathing way too fast. Since the other clown seems to be breathing normally, that rules out water quality issues or communicable gill disease. The rapid breathing combined with the thick body and bulging eyes usually means edema, from kidney or liver damage. That can be caused by internal bacterial infection. Sorry, but it isn’t treatable. Hoping then, that I’m wrong.

Is this something natural or did something cause this?

Could be from an internal bacterial infection, very difficult to treat. These bacteria exist in many aquariums, but fish only get sick when their resistance gets lowered for some reason,

Jay, could a freshwater dip possibly help with breathing ?
or ultimately put an end to fish suffering ?

I don’t think it is gill parasites since only one fish is affected….but like all cases, I’m never 100% certain

So no reccomendations? Is it worth dipping? At this point and won't hurt anything right?
It could stress the fish to the point of death, but not doing anything is also going to end the same way. A dip would actually make the edema worse.
There just isn’t anything that can be done if this is acute liver or kidney failure - like in people, transplants would be the only solution…..sorry.

Thanks for the wisdom and kind words. Amazing how 5 months in you get attached to fish and coral that are in your living room. He's my favorite clown too as the female is a big bully and they were my first fish in. If/when he goes do you recommend replacing him relatively soon?

Replacing clowns can be tough - I would suggest asking on the clownfish forum here the best way to pair up an old and new clown.
