Bulk Biopellets

Looking at running the BRS Bulk Bio Pellets to get my Nitrates down on my system.
I have about 500 gallons at all, including a 150G Rubbermaid Sump.
I’m currently running a BRS dual media reactor with Premium Carbon and High Capacity GFO, but I have another of the dual media reactors.
It looks like I need ~8 cups of pellets so I was going to get the 64 oz container, and split it between the two chambers, and run it with a Maxi Jet 1200, and then change out 50% every ~6-9 months.

move never ran this before but I need some more places for concentrations of denitrifying bacteria in my system and this seems like a good option.
Even thinking I may end up pulling the GFO, as I want to maintain some phosphates for me mangroves and macros. Well see.

Biopellets are not denitryfying bacteria. They just use it as they grow.

Do you have a skimmer?

What light do you have for your refugium?

Also, I don't think a dual reactor would work well for biopellets but you might want to ask brs.

I have 2 24” t5ho with geismann plant bulbs over a 26 G fuge, I have a thread on it, it’s pretty unique.
I think I’ve had the lights mounted too high above the tank so I am moving them down lower later today.

I know bio pellets are not denitrifying bacteria, but it would turn my reactor into a densely populated place for populations of the bacteria to live. Right?

I have a skimmer but it’s not probably only rated for 150G? And I have 500. I plan to upgrade, but I have been tweaking the rest of my system.

U could fill it with ceramic rings. Live rock rubble... lol.
I suggest a pellet reactor.if ur gonna tumble pellets. Output into the skimmer. Thats all.

Dude, just put the bio pellets in a media bag and toss them in your sump. You dont need a plastic cylinder to toss the pellets around. Done it this way forever.

Biopellets are basically just starch that feeds nitrate that grows on the surface of the pellets. All they need is a place with a lot of water flow - thats it. They are not genetically modified to only grow if being tossed in a plastic cylinder like my underwear in the laundry. Im not even going to glorify the stupid term "reactor" because its just a holdover from the days of fluidized beds which another marketed gimmick.

It takes a few weeks for them to ramp up and colonize. The cool thing about using a media bag is if you want more nitrate reduction just toss another bag in. Or take some out if its too much nitrate reduction. Wow. Amazing! No need for plastic cylinder thing with a input / output spigot on either end
