Hey guys I'm trying to figure out what size balkhead came in my drilled tank. The diameter of the hole in the bulkhead for the PVC is one and a half inch so do I buy a one and a half inch bulkhead or do I figure out what size PVC fits into it and by the bulkhead according to the size of the PVC

Not clear. Are you saying the hole in the tank for the bulkhead is 1 1/2" or you already have a bulkhead that will accept pipe with a 1 1/2" OD? If the former it's a 3/4" sch40 bulkhead that you need.

Are you talking about the hole in the glass that the bulkhead goes into, or the actual hole size in the bulkhead fitting? Because it sounds like you're talking about the size of the fitting hole, but then saying you need to buy a bulkhead. Kinda confusing.

Sorry I already have a bulkhead but the person I bought it from cut the PVC coming out of a too short so I need to replace the whole bulkhead the hole in the bulkhead is 1 and 1/2 in wide .... I'm not sure if the size of the hole in my tank as it is at my dad's house currently. I'm just trying to make sure I buy the right size bulkhead. The hole in the bulkhead is 1 and a half inches wide. I'm assuming I need a one and a half inch bulkhead but everyone knows that assuming usually gets you into trouble

You need to measure the OD of the PVC pipe going into the bulkhead, and take the bulkhead off and measure the hole in the glass. Once you measure the pipe OD, you need to reference a pipe chart to determine the nominal pipe size. For example, 1" pipe has a 1.315" diameter measurement, 1.5" pipe is 1.9" OD, and so on.

Based on the 1.375" approximate measurement on the pipe, you have a 1" bulkhead. Remove the bulkhead and measure the hole diameter in the glass. For example if it was a Lifegard brand, a 1" Schedule 40 bulkhead uses a 1.75" hole.

This is just a guess but I think the PVC might be schedule 80 it sends really thick on my opinion. I'm used to using schedule 40 .. The guy told me he thought it was a 1" bulkhead but wasn't sure.

You can attached a sch.80 pipe to a sch.40 bulkhead. Only way to be sure the new BH is ordered correct and fits is to remove and measure the hole in the glass. Measuring the wall thickness of the pipe will tell you the pipe schedule, just reference a nominal pipe chart. The hole in the glass is specifically sized for the bulkhead size and schedule. The hole is larger if its a sch.80 bulkhead, and you cannot use a sch.40 BH on a hole drilled for a sch.80 BH. Its probably a sch.40 since that is more common, but never assume anything.

Yea, you really gotta go by the hole size in the glass tank. Just an fyi... A 1" bulkhead means it accepts 1" pipe, but the bulkhead actually fits a bigger hole than 1".
