I'm in this hobby for the long haul. I've been keeping salt water fish and invertebrates for over 25 years, and have poured more blood, sweat, and tears (all literally) into this hobby than all my others combined. For my current setup, I'm already in the tens of thousands of dollars for equipment and fish alone, and will probably spend thousands more on corals to fill my display over the years. I want to protect my pets and my investment, and would like to begin a value-added dialogue on methods and equipment that the pro's use on their 10, 15, 20 year systems.

What are your go-to heaters? Lighting? Return pumps? Internal or External? What are your rules and hard-stops for plumbing? Bulkheads? Tank penetrations? What are your thoughts on all-in-one monitors and controllers? Timers? Internal or external skimmers? Media reactors? Calcium, Kalkwasser reactors, and dosers? What is your must-have redundant equipment? Backup power sources? Power-loss notifications systems?

I'm not talking easiest, quickest, most efficient. Let's discuss what is proven. Let's chat about mean time between failures. Let's talk brands and equipment that just won't die. I don't want to talk about what will grow my coral best - I want to know what to use and how to configure it so I can go on a 2 week vacation and be able to put my house on the fact that everything will be in-tact when I return. In the responses below, I will save space for summaries, guidelines, equipment, brands, and methods that appear to be generally accepted by the pro's, and those who have had aquariums for many years without catastrophic failures due to equipment.

Tell us how old your tank is, what your using, how you set it up, and why. Pick your topic, and just click "Reply". Go!

Water Top Off / Water changes:
Tunze ATO I have been running mine for nine years without a failure ... I don’t use kawlkwasser in my ATO reservoir though . As long as you keep the optic eye clean and the float switch clear it will stand the test of time !

Skimmers:
Tunze skimmers. They have an overflow feature and are truely set and forget as they come.
I used a tunze skimmer that was on a rail system that floated on top of the tank in the late 80' early 90's. That thing just worked.
I have a 9410dc on my 120 and 45 frag tank.
Turn it off turn it back on with no adjustment. It just skims.
They should be more popular but they are not.

Thank you for the response here. I have heard this about the Tunze ATO from several sources, including talks by companies who build reef/fish/aquaculture systems for a living. Is there any way to add a float valve on to this system for an extra level of redundancy?

Dosing: Calcium Reactors/Kalk Reactors/Dosing Pumps

They have an optical sensor for level control and a float valve for high level shutoff.
I use them too

I’ve run the old school ASM skimmer for over a decade while replacing 1 pump which was probably my fault it failed. I’ve modded it with a gate valve to quiet it down and to make adjustments easier. It can pull as much as I want out depending on how I have the gate valve adjusted. I guess if it’s not broke don’t fix it with a $1000+ new style skimmer. I run the 4+ on a 220 with zero complaints.

No I don’t believe so the tunze ATO Is an all in one plug and play unit . Now I use the Neptune apex with a breakout box with a separate float switch to shut the Tunze off once it triggers the float switch and back on once the level drops it helps when doing water changes so I don’t have to turn it off this is how my redundancy works . I’m sure there are other ways to go about though .
