Today I just noticed this on my yellow tang. Both side fins and his tail look like they have been chewed excessively… I do not think I have an aggressive fish in the tank. The second picture shown here captures about everything I have. Can anybody help? And more importantly will he heal??

Most likely.

I'd start by doing a freshwater dip (match temp) in a dark bucket to see if any flukes come off. Whether they do or don't, you'll need to do the following. Note: If flukes (sesame seed looking things generally) DO come off, you'll want to do a prazipro dip.

With an infection like that, you need NFG (Nitrofuracin Green). You can start with Kanaplex, Furan 2, and Metroplex. When NFG comes in, use it for 14 full days. It's very aggressive to bacteria.

Good luck, keep us posted.

I'd act fast, infections can kill in 24 hours or less. Hopefully that doesn't happen.

Administer meds in a separate quarantine tank. Source some biospira and add it to a cheap HOB filter (with media removed, add some "sponge or non poly media in its place in the filter) to help with biofilter. An ammonia alert badge is a good idea, it will tell you when you need more biospira to reduce ammonia naturally.

Well crap-
#1 what is the best medicine to order?
#2 I live in the middle of nowhere. There’s no fish store anywhere here. I have to order it quick! Geeze- 24 hours..
#3 is it contagious to the rest of the fish?

I do not have a separate quarantine tank – but I could definitely find something and make it work.

1) NFG as above, and kanaplex metroplex and furan 2 for now (more readily available try amazon)— NFG has to be purchased online I believe fishman sells it.
2) Amazon
3) Yes but most healthy fish aren’t likely to be impacted. The flukes (if applicable) are very ”contagious”

To reiterate — kanaplex metroplex and furan 2 are to placehold until NFG comes.

Well I don’t have ANY of them... wish me luck! Thanks for your help!
Amazon can get those to you quickly, that's why I suggested it. You COULD decide only to use them, but I ALWAYS trust NFG in clutch situations with bacterial infections. It's by far the best. It may take a week to get it shipped to you, so I tried to give you more readily available alternatives in the interim :)

You can even use a very clean plastic storage tub for a QT until you can get something better.

Well I’m getting ready to do the freshwater dip so we’ll see if any flukes fall off. [emoji33][emoji33]

Well never mind... he died. Amazing and sad. I fed him yesterday- ( we talk a lot... he seemed fine) and today red spots and then gone. Now at least I will have medicine on hand if it ever happens again.... [emoji37][emoji22]

If it’s possible I would try and find out how it happened, that’s some pretty severe wounds. Another fish, parasites, etc.... I have many fish and occasionally one get a fin nipped off, a bight on its side, torn fins etc... but they always heal on there own within a few days or so without any meds just prestine water in my reef and heavy feeding of frozen foods.

What kind of water?
I feed frozen foods-
I have/ had only had him about a month, so maybe he came with it?
I watched and watched my tank and never saw any aggression- day or evening...
No clue. Just sad.

I don’t do water changes but started with Red Sea coral pro and use it occasionally to keep the salinity at desired levels. I feed frozen Hikari foods. Sound like you didn’t have it long it could have came in with a nasty bacterial infection which took a while to rear it’s ugly head. With that kind of damage major aggression from another fish would have been pretty obvious. **** happens move on and good luck next time.
