Hi, my main tank is in the garage. My question is will burning propane in the garage significantly reduced my waters ph? Tank is roughly 330 gallon water volume. Right now my ph reaches 8.35 during day consistently. I could use a oil space heater if need be. But, for cost reasons I would rather not. The propane burner is a wall type if that makes a difference.

People claim that baking in a gas oven (natural gas, not propane) has a pretty noticable impact on ph. I'm not sure. Hopefully someone with more propane experience will chime in.

I would like to know also because the home I am moving into will have the same propane type wall heaters. Its only temporary but either way I don’t wanna lose my tank

I don't think you would lose a tank over it, just drop the ph. Could almost certainly negate the effects by using kalk in your top off.

Yes I almost edited that post. I stay on top of my tank enough to recognize any change and adjust. Just a forewarning is always good and makes me prepared.

It could lower it because the biproducts of burning propane are carbon dioxide, water, and carbon monoxide if low oxygen levels in air..

I looked into this more. The ventless ones are 99.99% efficient but you have to have a certain amount of square feet or efficiency goes down. If it is vented to the outside no worry unless it has a leak.

Not to steal the thread. But I Thank you very much for your info.
That's why people are here right? I had to think about this one twice. I read it too fast. At first I thought what burning propane?! are you mad. Then I saw the wall mount part after. These have to be safe to use indoors. If its the type I'm thinking about. The big ones you see mounted in the corners of garages, or anything open heat are definitely a no go.

Very true if I would of thought about it more. I could of answered it as well. The kerosene jet heaters choke me out in an open area. Surely depleting the oxygen. And it would only make sense the indoor would be almost completely efficient. Which I’m guessing should not effect the ph much if any.

That's where 1st post I made comes in. This is sadly why people croak. If CO2 Or CO gas gets too high. Less O2 more CO. Both can be fatal. Second post if certain kind heaters are bigger than rated sq footage could run into this. Excess CO2 gas from inefficient heater lowering ph. If in any other place I would not be worried about a fish tank but the people inside...

Im fairly confident a propane heater would tank your ph below 7.6. I would only use it if the heater is vented outside. My natutal gas oven brings my ph down to 7.6 when we cook cheesecake for 2.5 to 3 hours. And that kitchen is open the the whole house in a large space. I fixed it by adding a lid and pumping fresh air into the lid, overflow box and skimmer. Ph is now consistently between 8.1 to 8.25 day to night.

Wow, thanks for all the replys. It is not vented. It’s like one of those cheesegrater type ones that you bolt to the wall ya know? I just would like to know before this weekend. Temp is going below freezing. Oddly enough though it’s amazing how just heating a large volume of tanks can keep the room at like 50 degrees fahrenheit even at freezing. Thanks again

Picture?

It’s just like this one. Although this one is in the house. We just took down the Christmas stuff from attic so it’s crowded I garage right now.

Ok thanks! Guess I will hav’ft to break out the oil space heater. My tank has a good average ph so corals are adjusted to it. Wouldn’t want to throw that off with a propane heater. btw, I did read that propane does let’s off small amounts of carbon monoxide. But, we have had this one in the house for 20 years lol. Maybe that’s why I’m so loopy XD

You can get same emissions from kerosene heater? Plus some. Maybe because in garage it has enough of a draft. Could test this by setting up small un occupied tank with heater on low first. I would think the propane would be the cleaner option if any. Or crank it up and crack a window.
