Got my first mushroom couple days ago. I have 3 questions to all the more experienced...

1. I was simply told it was a butterfly mushroom. (Doesn't seem very precise) I'm thinking maybe discasoma....

2. The mushroom seems "happy" to me, not that I would know. Lol. Can't get it to eat mysis though. Could they be too big maybe??

3. I would like them to spread out a bit as they grow. Should I put the frag up against a rock someplace? Or will they spread out on sand?

Any advice is appreciated.

Yup, look like a lava lamp discosoma to me!

I have never had mushrooms spread on the sand, so yeah, put it up against the rock. Mushrooms generally prefer (and will do better) under less direct light. There are exceptions, of course...

Awesome thanks for the reply. I don't have very strong lights. 72 w PC over 29 gallon cube 75% actinic 25% 10,000k so I'm thinking low light at best...

I'll move it over to a better spot. Will it stay open like that only if it is content in the tank?

Also do you think as these little shrooms get bigger that the small dots on them will change color at all? Ie become more pronounced yellow or orange color?

It will likely get bigger with less direct light, for what it's worth. The size of the mushroom will not really make a difference on the colour (at this size anyway). The lighting and environment will bring out the colour. Once they are in the sweet spot, the bubbles/bumps will start to green up (maybe yellow, depending on the morph), and the inner tones will start to come out.

I am moving it under a little rock overhang. Thanks for the advise.
