I have found quite a few used tank setups in my area, and am wondering what others think of this for a beginner? Any pitfalls to be wary of?

Only word of advice on buying a used setup that's already up and running, do some serious research. Ask questions "why are you selling the tank" "how old is the equipment" ect... while used systems can be gotten at a really good price, you also want to make sure you're not inheriting someone elses problem. :)

new!

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I kind of knew that I was going to go with new. Being reminded of possible pitfalls of purchasing used equipment is helpful. I'm just not knowledgeable enough about this to be able to sufficiently judge someone's answers to the suggested questions.

I have the same dilemma given how cheap used tanks are and how expensive new ones are

99% of my equipment are used to save $. No need to fret, just buy emtpy tanks and give it a bleach and vinegar bath to disinfect it then you're good to go. I do this with each used equipment that I buy prior to using it in my tank. If concerned tank has leak, u can always ask seller to fill tank w water to make sure its still water tight.

If it’s in good shape go for it. Can save a bundle and get a bunch of extras with the deal
A tank that has never been up and running can be stored for years. Once a tank is up and running you can’t leave it empty for too long because the silicone will degrade. 6 mos to a year tops would be a good guesstimate. Depending on where it was stored, how long it was up and running, tank size and glass thickness

I've bought used for FW but for my reef the only thing I've bought used is a light - anything that was going in my tank I bought new simply because as a brand new reefer I didn't have the experience to discern when something was functioning properly or things were about to go awry. Now that I have some experience I would possibly feel more confident in purchasing used but not gonna lie it still makes me nervous lol.
