Buying a house need help with Fish Room Plans....

So we have finally been approved by the bank and can now officially start looking at the houses we have been staring at online for months now! This is going to be my first house so im very excited!! :tongue:

My Ultimate goal would be to have a fish room that would house the water making system and sump. there would be a MAIN DT and frag tank hooked up to the sump. The main DT could be in the same room "inwall" or could be upstairs as a peninsula tank.

I figured the easiest part to start out with is the Water Making System / Area. I have come up with some plans and wanted to run it by the good folks of R2R to see if anyone would change anything or see an issue with my design.

So i found this image on google which is really what im shooting for:

So my thought is I would have the freshwater tank and saltwter tank be 80 gal rectangle tanks. I would use a Pan World 50PX (not sure if this is the proper pump or if you have a better recommendation) . The only change i would make is coming from the top of the pump i would have 2 outlets instead of just the one brown line and green circle. One would be to hook up a hose. and my goal is to have the other one run out to the sump which would hopefully be in the same room so i can do quick water change fills. So i have an extra ball valve in there for that. I think for mixing the water inside the salt tank i would use a korlia K3 pump or maxi jet. I was thinking of maybe using the Pan world not sure tho?

I personally would not have the same sump for both tank/frag, if you get a parasite/illness in there it will spread to both tanks then you could be SOL...

You are going to be using the pan world as your mixing pump correct ?

Instead of the pan world I would recommend a DC powered pump that way after your done mixing the salt you can crank down the pump just enough to keep the water moving for long term storage of your salt water

I would add a second ball valve opposite to the existing ones that will allow you to drain the individual tanks.

I should point out in the above photo that the Little Giant pump is only for the Water Storage System. It transfers water from the freshwater tank to the saltwater tank and mixes the saltwater tank. The Little Giant does not transfer water to the aquarium.

There is a Mag2 submersible pump in each tank. The pump in the freshwater tank is controlled by the Apex ATO and the one in the saltwater tank is controlled by the Apex AWC.

I was just thinking the pan pump would be to push water to the sump maybe i would have a powerhead in the salt tank?? not sure which way is better.

I always wondered why people had that extra valve there. makes perfect sense will def build that into my plan

I think that would work well, how large of a tank are you gonna have as your DT? Might wanna go bigger than 80 gallon tanks

We have a 20g frag tank with a 20g sump/fuge with skimmer, and the water parameters stay more stable in ours.

im hoping my DT is around 240 gals i think 80 should do. Those 80 gals where the only smaller containers i could find locally the next size up are those large vats. I can find em online but shippings pretty expensive.

First off congrats on your ability to buy a home.

I agree bigger tanks are better.
I see your in Ohio so there has to be a agricultural supply store near you.
The bigger chain store all carry them.
Big R, Tractor Supply, ETC. and there will be no shipping charges.

I am paranoid and like to have enough salt water on had to replace 100% of my water or close to it at all times.
I have had a tank crack and drain out, I had enough fresh saltwater on had to set up a temp 110g tank in minuets.
I also had a lightning storm that bumped power and MY Various 6 DC pump turned on and filled my sump with fresh RO/DI water lowering my salinity to 19 from 35.
It was my fault as I did not install all the safety controls, such as the actual Tunez 3155,
Nor the pumps float switch.
I use the float backwards of its intended purpose. I set them up on a high limit not a low.
Also one of the best things you can do in the long run is purchase quality ball valves.
Get true union schedule 80 valves.
The benefits with these are long term reliable use, they can be taken apart, reused, and cleaned when needed.

Another tip I would recommend is installing a NuClear canister filter.

I put this in between the pump and the output sides.
So the saltwater is filtered when mixing and dispensing.
The filters can be easily removed, cleaned, and replaced.

A DC pump in this situation I don't think I would use.
On my salt mixing station I use a little giant pump.
I have it on a timer and it turns it on twice a day for 15 minuets.
This keeps it fresh for much longer periods of time.

I keep the containers sealed and clean I use Bulk heads and Uniseals for the plumbing.
I use these Click here for other things like heater cords RO lines for ATO and auto water changes.

Lol this was from awhile ago

Im using one 75 gal container from Tractor Supply i fill it with water use that for evaporation when im ready for a water change i fill it up mix salt in it and useit im not using the 2 container method.

Yea, very long while back, I didn't think there was much of a chance I'd get a response, so thanks! I use a 75G atm as well, 23" wide, plus a couple 40G, have been contemplating today switching to that 80G square model, so was searching for anyone who uses it, haven't found anyone yet. It requires bracing due to expansion I'm assuming. Anyway all good, thanks for getting back to me, happy reefing!
