I am going to sell my Reef Octopus NW-200...it's just too big for my sump and a bit of an overkill for my 105 gallon...What are your votes for the best, less space-taking and QUIETEST skimmer for a 105 gallon...I was looking at the new DC pump Reef Octopus...does anybody have any experience with that unit?...I need the most quiet one possible....please let me know what you think.

Swc all the way ,had a swc 160 cone and worked great i now have a swc 230 and is a beast and the vendor is a sponsor here reef filtration

Fallowing this one. I am looking at the 250 and have been looking for reviews for my new build. The new DC has a few new features. Feed mode along with variable speed. Curious on how quiet the new DC motor is. I have read that it produces great skimate. Hopefully someone will chime in.

They are super quiet and I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to hit that clean button, clean the cup and then have it come back on automatically, I am horrible about plugging things back in so maybe that one is good for someone like me. The variable speeds are also nice. There has been a few times something has made my skimmer go nuts and I can lower the speed for a bit then hit the button later and it goes right back to skimming at the sweet level. These are minor features but were things I never thought of until I owned one.
The low energy consumption and quiet operation are the best part of them, I liked the one in my skimmer so I bought a Diablo for my return, the same features I mentioned also make them great for a return.
my vertex is the quiest thing i have ever heard. and it is a fraking beast! i don't think that dc pump technology is tried and true. i want my skimmer to skim , and skim all the time. my alpha cone 250 has only been running two days and is producing heavy foam head. even after feeding or putting hands in the tank, it does not stop skimming or producing foam. quality is beyond great. pump is super quite.

I vote something with a DC pump as well. I had a Vertex Omega 150, and exchanged it for a RLSS R6-I, and I must say, the RLSS is hands down a way better performer then the Omega was I had. The Omega was very inconsistent. The day I stuck the RLSS in it has been skimming dark skimmate where as the Omega never had a consistent head.. The pump on the RLSS is absolutely silent, and it doesn't take much room up at all.

Great thread. I'm buying a skimmer this week and have the same thoughts and questions. I'm leaning toward the AquaMaxx EM200 although its out of stock everywhere. I might also like a DC pump skimmer. I have a Speedwave DC10000 as my return pump running at half speed and it is no doubt the quietist pump I have ever used. I'm not sure a Skimmer needs multiple speeds?
