My local LFS sells Acros for a discount if in their experience the frag never opens. Should one buy an Acro coral where the seller says the polyps never extend, and can't comment on growth as it's in frag tank with low lights.

I feel I would buy it and it would never extend or grow, however still continue to live. Therefore I have chosen to avoid; perhaps my gut feelings are wrong?

I wouldn’t stock my tank with Them but it could be worth a shot if your tank is stable and you want to roll the dice on turning it around

I have 0 PE on any acro, but I also have a flame back angel.

All I'm saying is there might be other factors in their frag tank that doesn't allow them to open. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a few, as long as they looked healthy(just no PE).

Every tank is different.

Wouldn't bother me, I have angels, my acros don't "open" either, still seem to be happy healthy and growing to me. Also some acros basically never do open, all the smooth skin ones to start, not sure I have ever seen a polyp on an Oregon Tort though I am sure they have them.

There can be a lot of reasons for no poly extension, high nutrients, pests, fish, water chemistry etc.

You would have to look at overall health of the coral to determine if it's something that can be fixed by taking it and putting it in better water quality or a new environment (free of pesky fish) or if the tank is suffering from red bugs or any other host of problems that would require either a qt process or a dipping regimen.
