Hello all, I'm a past owner +12 years old getting back into the hobby. I've stumbled upon a system someone is selling locally at a very good price that fits my budget. The concern I have is all the fish are in QT with ICH. I can tend to them for the remainder of the cycle with copper.

The question I have is would anyone be concerned about this purchase? I intend to empty the tank, transport and setup with new water and cycle. This should rid ICH from the tank? I plan to store the live rock in a bin with circulation pump and with no fish in there this too should become ICH free by the time the tank cycles?

Let me know if this is a system I should avoid.... or if my plans seem reasonable and will have long term success with no ICH.

Thanks in advance!

If your willing to do the work and wait the time fallow it could be a great deal. Just don't rush to get the fish back into the tank with the live rock. Ich can survive on the rock. I'd keep the rocks wet to transport and just set the tank up and leave it fallow. This way Ich will die before you reintroduce the fish.

If you won't be recycling rocks or keeping anything wet from that tank, you can bleach the tank and let it completely dry for 2-3 days to be safe. That should eradicate any encysted tomonts. If you plan to recycle rocks etc then you have to run it fallow for ~76 days.

Thanks guys. Question, what is the bleach method? and what is "fallow" in reference too?
Really appreciate the comments so to ease my mind on the used purchase.... going to see it today.

Bleaching will kill any pests in the tank. Almost any concentration up to 1/10 bleach will work, I've always used more concentrated bleach just to be safe. For example you can do 1 part bleach 6 parts water, fill the tank, let stand for 10-15min, empty and let it dry then rinse again and let air dry.

fallow or fishless means removing all fish from the tank but you can keep inverts and rocks in provided you wait 76 days to ensure any encysted ich tomonts on rocks/glass/sand etc starve. During the process you should not add anything "wet" from another tank. Ich needs fish to survive.
