Lyretail anthias
Keep an eye on them and feed them often now that you have them. More than you think you should. I got 3 to begin with put them in a qt tank. Because of the stress of a qt tank even without medicinal treatment lost 2 to uronema. The next set was 6. Put them directly in the display and lost 0. But had to feed them a lot. They are planktivores. They feed constantly in the wild.

And if you lose any to uronema don't be to alarmed. Even Jay hemdal says it's rarely contagious (like 1%) and doesn't occur in established fish. It's more about the stress of collecting and shipping that does it.

Good to know, I'll set up my plank auto feeder tonight then instead of waiting

Thawed a mysis cube out, put a tiny bit in the tank when I could see one of them to check if they were ready to think about eating. The other 3 appeared immediately. All 4 ate.

That's good news!

whats a good number of them look like, asking for a friend
I'm also curious, I started with 4 but wouldn't be opposed to adding more down the road, I've read they can get difficult once they're established if you try to add more of the same species, but I might consider a cluster of the purpley ones.

I like odds... 3 5 7 9... one becomes the male the rest his loyal... or not so loyal subjects...

That's why I went with an even number. 1 male and his brood - I felt like I needed the girls to be an odd number :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Not that it matters, they're all minding their own business in here anyway. Aside from when they first went into the tank, they've been all spaced out and not together by any means. Going to end up with a bunch of fish who don't know how to be friends because the tank is too big for them to figure out anyone exists but themselves.

By that logic anything more than 2 of a kind will be ganging up on the rest
Sometimes that's exactly what happens :( the more successful time with 4 lyretail was with 9 chromis. They seem to put that energy toward them rather than each other. It was nice. The chromis would school and "evade danger", nobody ever got hurt

I was just pointing out that your statement made it seem like there was zero chance of success at all simply because there would be 3 females if all 4 survived, like 3 females was the unholy combination to doom all.

No! I didn't mean that at all!!
My best run with lyretails(4.5 yrs)was with 4. I didn't understand their feeding requirements the 1st try and they picked each other off. It was a joke referencing a real trait of these fish. They can be jerks to each other. Food is the most important part. 3/4 times a day is ideal. Other than that, I feel like they did better with other little fish to chase around so they don't focus on each other. They are one of my favorite fish

In the wild they get two tides; 2 incoming and 2 outgoing so 4 flowing tides bringing food. I would go with 4 feedings. I noticed from fishing that some fish would only hit during changing tides and some only on slack tides.
*Me guessing the right answer?*
