Hi!

Im going to start dosing nitrates and I'm able to acquire calcium nitrate, specifically LoudWold brand which is reagent grade. The bottles that I have comes in 113 grams presentation. This is the first time that I'm going to dose nitrates. In how much RODI water should I use to dilute the calcium nitrate to X concentrated solution? I currently have a 200g system.

Thank you

Do you have very low calcium as well? If not, you might be better off just dosing a nitrate source. Dosing calcium nitrate will raise both. A quick search will show a few recent discussions on this very topic. Unfortunately, none of the conversations listed any calculators for calcium nitrate.

Thanks for the reply. I do not have problems with calcium but to my understanding, there isn't a lot of calcium to really increase the levels of calcium but also, I'll be dosing little quantities since I just want nitrates to show up to at least 1ppm.

1ppm= 1mg/l , you want 1ppm in 50 gallons for example. convert gallons to liters 50 x 3.785 = 189.25 liters.....

1 mg X 189.25 liters= 189.25 / % nitrate of calcium nitrate (.7557)= 250.43 mg /1000 to get grams = .25 grams to get 1 ppm nitrate in 50 gallons.

that is for anhydrous, math changes for hydrates
(.523)

1 x 189.25= 189.25 / .523= 361.85/1000 = .36185 grams Ca(NO3)2

For ballpark values, use this calculator and the entry for potassium nitrate:

It will slightly overestimate the dose needed because there's more nitrate in calcium nitrate than potassium nitrate. Use about 23% less than it recommends to add tot eh tank if you want perfection.

There's another great calculator on this page: https://reefsuccess.com/2017/02/08/nitratecalc/

It's a google doc, the link to it is just below the image of the calculation table. When you open the google doc, BE SURE to click on the 'full' tab at the bottom. That's where you'll find individual calculators for potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate and calcium nitrate.
