So what do you do when you see this?

What do you do with the debris sitting on top? I know its just the remains of what media has been broken down, but do you clean it or just let it go? It sits on the top and there is nothing in the bottom of the reactor.

Curious to hear what others are doing.

I typically don't worry about it. I just add new media on top & just keep going. With that said, every other time of re-adding media I fully rinse what left & put it back.

Its time to add new media. I would get some new media and hose the reactor out before adding new media.

Once the media is depleted and you just get the mush on the bottom, suck it out with a bucket head shop vac, then replace all the lines as part of routine maintenance.

I havn't tried that yet. I may give that a try next time. Does it get the media that goes through the grate during cleanup?

It can, but I always take the grate and screen out to rinse for a thorough cleaning anyway.
