DinoBeater will be your new name soon!!

That's my point. Does the ocean use mechanical filtration?

The oceans use phytoplankton to gobble up most of the nutrients used by NO3 before it all becomes a hairy bacteria/algae soup

...and you can too brewing your own phyto
Something in there was keeping nitrate low, how long does phytoplankton live in there?

Thanks! I sure hope so. After last night I seriously contemplated tearing down the main tank. But I'm sticking to it! I do know that I hate cannister filters and will never buy another!

Doing a NO3 test is like gauging how much food you have 4 hrs after a large Thanksgiving dinner for 30 ppl

Most NO3 testing is the amt of NO3 left after all your nuisance bacteria (Dino, cyano) or a stringy algae have had their feast.

The beauty of phyto is its a fast consumer of no3 before the other nuisance bac/algae get to eat.

Phyto beats them to the dinner table and starves out the nuisance bac/algae

Once phyto is done it pretty much gets skimmed out or eaten by pods

At night when I cloud my tank with phyto, by morning the water is crystal clear.

If it is still a lil murky, I know to skip a day of phyto for the water to clear up.

Pretty much my M.O. is:

1) feed the tank heavy with fresh seafood, mostly mussels, clams.... so they fish have their feast. The corals have their feast

2) by 11pm each night, turn off main pump and skimmer thru Apex and dump.about 32ozs of deep green live phyto in the DT so that the water is murky

3) I go to bed

4) during the night the phyto pac-men are gobbling up the days excess nutrients and no3

5) once phyto has done its job, I believe most of the phyto is either consumed by all my copepods or gets skimmed out

6) by morning I lay eyes on the tank. If clear, I start the process all over again. If still slightly murky, I skip a day.

Been doing this I think 1.5 yrs maybe 2. Other than some front glass slime once a week, I don't have algae nor Dino, cyno bacterial problems

Hth. I don't spell this out for just anyone, lol. bc I'd be explaining this process to every other thread on R2R.

Yeah... how do you think the World's Oceans aren't overrun with all kinds of problems? (Well other than climbing water temps and human waste/chemicals)

Bc phyto is running amuck neutralizing the Oceans. A natural balancing act.

There's a huge library of past posts. If you search keywords like "tetraselmis" or "phytoplankton" you'll see some deep discussions. It'll change your whole husbandry skillset.

I am.of the opinion that it's sad that sooooo many reefers suffer from Dino, cyan, algae and its all pretty much solved with turning your ecosystem into being dependent on nightly dosing of phytoplankton you brew yourself.

Search the keywords within R2R

.
+1 this.

I stated doing this too for a week and have noticed a slower algae growth despite heavy feeding.

Just finished my first brewed batch that will last me a couple of months.

I dosed it heavy - about 1.5ml per gallon 2x a day - once just before light on to help outcompete photosynthesis, and once more after light goes off to feed the pods and critters that come out at night.

Wow thats very helpful how you explained it! And geez that's alot of phyto, how big is your tank? I was only dosing about 10ml in a 55 lol. I would like to know how you're brewing yours and the setup. Do you have a thread on it?

Detritus and bacteria likely within that mud . Also possible that you we’re getting false readings. Bio rings were popular a few years ago and offered good surface area and oxygen for bacteria
Lfs and I were getting same readings. Lots and lots of detritus. I thought I might have had a bacteria issue with corals and did melafix and primafix (I think that was the names) back around February, I can see now where that came from. I am shocked by the whole ordeal and really surprised everything wasn't much worse, for my fish especially. Corals and everything look fine thankfully. Hopefully only up from here!

I was scared to do it bc it seemed like lab work but honestly its quite easy once you do it. There are tons of videos youtube on it. What the most critical parts are 1) a clean container with lid that you can drill holes 2) f2 fertilizer 3) seed, 4) light source, 5) airs stone and pump

Ah ok!

Ok, I will be the first one to call for pics of your tank...................

Keep doing it brother.... youre going to witness amazing things transform

More detailed outline of what I do:

Sidenote: I'm about to upgrade to a 8ft 310g Planet tank built in Dallas Fort Worth. pulling the trigger for a Sept delivery. $4k for tank and stand, which I think.is a great deal for a custom hand built tank.

what species of dino? I've beat dinos pretty easily....seems like a combo approach for me works. Usually just run the UV for a few days/nights and take out my skimmer cup, then a 72 hour blackout, with some doctor Tim's cocktail. I had ostreopsis last time and the blackout was the nail in the coffin IMHO.

I have ostreopsis as well. They did go away with a blackout in December for about 4 months and then came back. I won't make the mistake again though of not dosing any nutrients!

melafix is teak tree oil and pimafix for bacteria.

Fish seem to be having fun at their summer camp haha

I did both. I wonder if I should dose again or probably should just wait until I see warning signs
