I've provided some pictures of my current setup/situation to kind of illustrate what Im dealing with.

Im looking for some help in redoing the cords in my fishroom and I have a couple of a roadblocks that Im working through that Im wondering how some folks who have their cords and equipment all neat and tidy managed to address.

My fish room is pretty small, right now all the outlets and power I have provided is the room with the tank. Ideally Id like to have all the power located in the room on the other side wall opposite of the tank, which is a laundry room.

So I have a couple of problems and concerns when it comes to relocating these wires to nearby rooms like some folks have with their set up, or even if Im going to keep the power in the tiny fish room and create a panel with a false bottom to hide cords and such.

- What do you guys do with equipment that have tiny cords??? My BRS dosers and to an extent, my heater have tiny cords and I need to keep them on the side of the sump thats opposite of my power panel. Do you guys just have extension cords tied up to make up the distance?? Im not a huge fan of that.

- What do you all do with the annoying transformer boxes we have on equipment such as led lights and vortechs?? You know, the little 3x6" black boxes. Those things are annoying placed halfway into the run of the cord. Where do you stuff those?

Thats mainly it for my problems. I personally like using the In-Use weatherproof coverings for my outlets, but some might consider that overkill, especially considering its protected with a GFI breaker, but I know electrical inspectors would still require it.

The problem is mainly cord length to accommodate the run to this organized locating. I look at some folks pictures with the organized cord set ups that are sometimes in a different room and Im wondering if whats not shown in the pictures are extension cords tucked behind the sump or in a wall, etc. Id also have a problem stuffing all these transfomers, extension cord connections, etc behind a wood panel with a false bottom just because theres a lot that can go wrong there in a tight combustible space that you cant see visually at all.

Perhaps Im too cautious, either way, Id love to be enlightened. Pics of your setup too would be great

I'm a IT operations person. I use to rack/stack servers in datacenters where cable management is a big thing. So here's an easy way to make your fish room nice and neat. Take a few pieces of like 1x2 pine boards and make a box with 1 or 2 center supports ( depending on size) Then take a sheet of plywood and pay it over the boards and screw it in place. You've created a raised mounting board you can mount your equipment to and hide your coards behind. Drill some holes in the plywood for these

For anything short, I just buy some extension cord to run it back to the apex eb8 if needed.

I’m not visualizing what you’re describing. Do you have a picture?

I used an ikea medicine cabinet with holes drilled in bottom for cords. Added a pc of plywood to back for mounting power strips. A plastic piece attached below for mounting controllers with double stick tape. A strip of lighting around so the controllers don't think it is night all the time. Works well. Need to add a 3rd strip. Used several 1, 2 and 3 feet extension cords as needed.

New build will have a partition to create an electrical side away from sump. 1 pc of plywood as a partition, 1 added to far right for mounting, probably half a pc across back--depends on plumbing. Probably no way around extension cords.

Nice job!

Eventually I'll get some cord clamps and do a better job on the wires by routing to the sides, but that at least got them out of way of the light sensors on the wavemakers

What do you want to do? Hide your cables or simply manage them? For hiding them, the above suggestions work well. If you’re simply looking to manage them and tame the beast, there are a lot of potential options.

  • 3M Clear round cord clips - nice for a single power cord, or a couple of small cords. Unobtrusive and easily removable, easy to get the cord in and out
  • 3M Clear large cord clips - nice for routing several small cables. Easy to slip them in and out.
  • Spiral Cord Wrap or Braided Sleeving - neatly bundles cords together. A bit of a pain to get on and off, so not the best if you’re going to change things in the future.
  • Zip ties and tie down pads - cheap, easy. (The tie-down pads can be a pain to get off, though)
  • Velcro loops - handy for bundling things
  • Wiring Duct
  • I would also recommend using a label maker or some other means of labeling cords both at the plug as well as at the end near the tank (i.e. I have labels on my optical sensors close to the tank and at the plug.) That way when you’re trying to trouble shoot or move things later on it’s easy to figure out what’s what.
