So this morning I lost my Pearlscale Butterfly... not 100% sure what happened but I think he was accidentally stung by my foxface as they have been kind of hanging out, eating and sleeping side by side lately. A little TOO close. Anyway I need to get him out of the tank but he is under my rock pile. I can see him clearly and would be able to get him if I could hypothetically take a piece of wire and bend it to shape but the only wire I have is copper and I dont want that in there. Im in a mood because of the loss and Im having a hard time using ingenuity and coming up with contraption.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry to hear that you lost your fish.:( Maybe just use your hands and some long tweezers. I have had all kinds of things get back in the rocks and need to be removed. Sometimes the old hands are the best approach.

I agree. I lost a clownfish a few months back, and he was sooooooo caught in the rock work. I tried all sorts of crazy ideas, but in the end breaking some bones with my hands was the easiest, and grossest thing I've ever done.

Thanks guys. I have a 30" deep tank so using my hands is out. Anyone know what coat hanger wire is made out of?

Usually steel but dont take my word for it

Ive had bristle worms eat a small dead fish overnight

Most coat hangers are made of steel. There are also coated with varnish/paint to keep them from rusting. I wouldn't hesitate to stick a coat hanger in there as long as it's clean and only long enough to remove the fish. I wouldn't see it causing any harm but, you would have to make that call.

The tank isnt that old so there isnt too many pest and only a few small crabs [emoji886]
Guess I'll start looking for a hanger. [emoji20]

Siphon hose if you have a smaller diameter.

I would bet he will be gone by the morning. The clean up crew and the amazing eco system in the tank will make him disappear!

Always good to have a variety of reaching tools, hemostats, straight and curved. Rampley forceps, long tweezers bent and straight. Those are all must haves, if you have and aquarium 24" deep (or more) and 24" wide (or more) IMO.

Chances are he will be consumed quickly. Maybe the LFS will be open and have a suitable reaching tool that you can use (if he is still there)
