So I added 24lbs of the stuff to my sump tonight. My tank looks like someone poured a gallon of coffee in it. Anywho, my new tank is a RedSea Peninsula 650. Just finished cycling and has a few softies that I started slowly moving over from my 40. I’m going to wait on the LPS and SPS for a bit until things have calmed down.

So my question is this. Has anyone seen a noticeable difference when using mud in their sump? I will also being sticking a ball of chaeto in tomorrow under my Kessil to deal with the nitrates that are higher than I’d like since I did a fishless cycle with ammonia.

Thoughts and opinions on the stuff please!

Thanks!! :)
And I meant to say miracle mud. Apparently you can’t edit the title of the post

Many people swear by Miracle Mud. I am not convinced that it's anything special. An analysis of the product done a few years ago found that it was mostly sand. Additionally, the product is shipped dry. So there is likely little, if any, bacterial life on the surface of the product.

Miracle Mud is fine to use in a reef tank. In terms of functionality, however, it's more of a deep sand bed and a place for microflora and fauna to live than it is a "miracle."

MM has been around for donkey's years. I used it back in the late 90's as part of an effort, ultimately unsuccessful, to have a thalassia lagoon tank. I occasionally think about trying again, but the seagrass is hard to find. Otherwise, I really don't see the point. Seems a lot like the detritus/crud that I occasionally siphon out of my sump. Maybe I should be selling it.

Thanks for the feedback. I love how they market that this product is the best thing since, ya know, sliced bread.

Sounds like I shouldn’t be expecting any miracles....

I habe used it on some tanks and not on others. Never did seem much of a difference wirhout it or any major benefit to using it.
