Calling all the reefers with external overflows.

So one of the 1-1/2 drains runs at full siphon.

Did you have any issues with the horizontal run or does it achieve full siphon right away?

Which pump?
No issue withe the siphon. I run a reef octopus varios 8 at less than half speed but the overflow will easily handle full speed. I would be wary of reducing the pipe size on a drain. Any plimber will tell you that's a huge no-no on drain piping.

I have an eshopps eclipse running bean animal with 1" drains running 1000GPM. Corner overflow.

It's a straight drop into the sump, so nothing more than spa flex, compression fittings and a gate on the siphon.

I’m done with full siphon overflows- went back to twin flex drains and one emergency. Gentle noise doesn’t bother me. Overflow is Eshopps Prodigy.

My current "temporary" setup is crazy loud. Annoying loud!

BIG Goal this time is to make it nearly silent with everything DC and nicely tuned full siphon overflow. Hoping I can get there in the next month or two.

...

Ok, I bolded the last part because of one reason. Put the gate valves for the full siphon as close to the sump as possible, preferably right at the bulkhead on the sump. This will keep the full siphon as quiet as possible by filling the entire pipe with water. It will also be accessible for you to adjust in the future. If you think access behind the tank is limited now, you'll really be kicking yourself 3 years from now when you need to adjust that valve and can't reach it because you put something next to the tank.

Circling back to this; it's been a while but sometimes life gets in the way of things.

This I believe is the most important thing to mention. My setup came out absolutely silent.

There are so many setups out there that put the valve (wrongly) below the external box. My 2 boxes purge instantly after a restart and are absolutely silent.

AGAIN, THANKS MUCH!!!

Nice!!

I saw this tip in a plumbing video with Bill Wann, and I don't know why but it stuck with me.

I’ve got an external coast 2 coast overflow. It runs the length of the tank, 48” with 3 - 1.5” drains. The one in the middle is an emergency overflow.
