I just purchased a new kole tang from the LFS this past Saturday. He seems to be fine, swimming around picking at rocks and glass, and no signs of ich or other diseases. Only problem is I can't get him to eat. I've tried brine and nori on a clip and he just doesn't want to have anything to do with it.

Any ideas on how to get him to start eating? What are their favorite foods usually? When should I start to worry?

Give it some time, the fish is probably still stressed and skittish. Keep nori in there, the fish will eventually warm up to it. If some more time goes by and you still can't get it to eat, then inspect the behavior very closely. Are there any other tank mates? Was it eating in the store? What other foods are you trying to feed? Mine eats dang near anything I put in the tank... pellets, flakes, frozen, etc.

Try putting Nori on a rock for the fish,
This +1

Use rubber bands to secure it to the rock. Its much more natural for them to graze on rocks that to feed from a clip.

That's what I do, it works better then the clip, a bit more inconvenient yes, but worth it? Definitely

Okay, I will try the nori on the rock probably next week. I won't be able to get a piece of rock till the weekend. Will the kole be okay picking at glass and rocks till then?

I mean I guess, mine is rubberbanded to a shell, it works, so as long as the nori covers the whatever is being used, I'm sure it will pick at it

You can rubberband it to a piece of PVC also.

yeah i use my kids left over braces rubberbands to put nori on a piece of rubble for my Desjardini and foxface and they love it. main thing is you are wanting the nori to look natural by waving in the water. other than that, you can virtually attach it to anything even to the corner of a piece of live rock.

Try garlic. i don't use it often but mine goes crazy for nori and garlic. you can soak some pellets in garlic and after it sinks to the bottom it might pick at it later. wasit eating before you bought it?

Yes, fish store said it was devouring the seaweed while there. That's why I am confused. I'm wondering if it is still stressed.

All of the advice here is all this tang nerd was going to suggest. Garlic, blackworms (live), live brine, nori on a rock, etc.

I will say tangs do tend to be more enticed by red nori in my experience, you may also try that.
