I know nothing about cameras or photography but I'd like to start taking pics like the ones you've posted here. What camera are you using? Would you recommend it for me? And what's up with the different lenses? Ex; macro lens?
I was thinking about getting a gopro because I could use it for many purposes. It seems to take nice photos but would it be a good candidate for taking tank pics? Thanks in advance everyone.

What I bought was:
refurbished Nikon D5100, at least you get a warranty, instead of buying off craigslist and it still want more than a refurbished one 400.
Tokina 100mm macro off craigslist 225.
for all around get 18-55mm, just bought a new one off craigslist today for 85.
yah, that's way over 500, but you will need a macro lens, at least 100mm.

Just keep looking on craigslist for a 100mm macro. canon, nikon, I got a great deal on mine. Then buy body.
otherwise it gonna cost more.

I think ktar is selling his canon right now. ahh, he just sold it...

I shoot with a Canon 7D and several lenses. Most of my tank photos are taken with a Canon 100mm Macro.

Closer to your budget, I used to shoot with a Canon Rebel Xt, which I purchased used, and the same Canon 100mm Macro.

I would look for a used DSLR, in either Canon or Nikon, that comes with a decent lens. Typically, the "kit" lenses aren't that high of quality, but will work fine, while you learn to use the camera. While you're learning the ins and outs of the camera, you can save up for a quality Macro lens.

I agree with Sid, DSLR with a good lens. In my opinion, look to spend as much or MORE on the lens, then you do on the camera body, the lens will work with several bodies, as you upgrade if you get a good one.

Galaxy note 2 lol :)

Buy a lower end DSLR body and high end lenses. When you are ready to upgrade the camera body all your lenses can still be used (as long as you stay with same brand, most cases).
