I have a canon rebel XTI and want a good macro lens to take close up coral pics. I see several
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8mm Macro USM Lens. For sale on crags list.Is this a good lens or what do you suggest ?

I have the 100 millimeter L series lens. It takes great pictures and has a decent focal length. If your tank is very deep though might need to get an extension to or 2X adapter. Or just get the 150 or 180.

I have the Red Sea reefer 450. I believe it is 20 inches deep. Anything in that back third of the tank is not very easy to get good and close. All my corals are still pretty small though. You should still be able to get good pictures with that lens. Especially if it's priced right, it would be a good starting point.

there is one 420 OBO I'm not sure if thats good price or not I'll have to do some research

I also have the xti and use a Tamron 90mm macro for most of my tank pics. here are a couple examples, I have more in my build thread as well

All three are very very good.
When looking for lenses I google image search the lens. You'll find a LOT of examples from them. Also a web site called Pbase. Check it out.
All of them are going to do far more than we need them to honestly. And for the price point the tamron and tokina are pretty stellar.
I'd bet the canon is the better lens though.

Yea. This from a Nikon guy.

Well a Rokkor guy actually. ;)

Nikon and Canon have the best lens line ups. In macro lenses, the third party manufacturers, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina, all make great macro lenses that are very nearly as good as the high end guys.
