The Nikon 105 is very expensive though it is one of the best macro lenses. Since you bought a D40 I doubt your going to fork over the cash for a 105.

I would get the Sigma 105mm. I own the Tamron 90mm, and although its a sharp lens the auto-focus is horrible. If you shoot on a tripod this doesn't really matter, but for top downs sometimes you need good auto-focus so this can be a pain in the butt.

Your budget is a little to low. I would bump it up to around $350. You won't get much for $150.. if anything.

Yea one thing about photogerphy, you can easly spend one or two times on one lense then what your body cost. Now you could go the route of extension tubes. They dont give you a image like a macro does, but if you want i could go click a few pics with mine and show you what there like. I first started with extension tubes cause there like 70 bucks then got the macro. Now i use the macro with a extension tube.

i'm also a Tamron 90 owner and very happy with it. one thing you may keep that in mind that with macro works, you need to use manual focus and tripod. so i'm not sure whether VR would help in this situation....
