I currently have a 10* year old Pentax k-x. I haven’t really tried it out on the tank too much but with technology changes I’m assuming it’s out dated and there are better options out there. I know this camera ran around $400-$500 but is there a comparable camera on the market today or would it be safe to say I would still be able to get similar pictures with the Pentax?

I'd use what you have for now. It should be more than capable of taking good pictures. It doesn't have a huge sensor so you won't get as much crop zoom or large prints from it, but otherwise it should be fine

Not familiar with the model u have but id assume if its that old most newer cameras would do a better job at focusing, metering and dynamic range as well as at image size. U need to decide what type of cameras u want to go with, dslr, fixed lense camera or.maybe a mirror less, decide on a budget and if possible on a brand ud like to go with if any so we can better suggest.

Maybe overkill? 300mm lens with macro. Shooting from 5 feet away
