Hello people, can anyone identify what these markings are on my fish? He’s still eating an everything but the fins don’t look so good and he has a mark right behind his eye. I’ve had to go through hell and back to keep this fish alive so I’m really frustrated at this point. Not sure what it is! Thanks for any help/responses!

Looks like something bacterial

Thank you for the response! Would you have any suggestions on how to treat it? I have metroplex and focus but will that be enough?

Ethromyacin always works effectively (aka- Maracyn 2)
Ruby rally pro also good but takes a little longer

Erythromycin is actually Maracyn 1. Maracyn 2 is apparently Minocycline. Maracyn 2 would be the choice for external bacteria though.

Metroplex and focus is for internal protozoan diseases, so won’t work for this issue. The best treatment would be a broad spectrum gram negative antibiotic in a treatment tank.
One thing I think I see- are there discolored areas on the fishes fins? What other fish are in the tank with it? It may all boil down to an aggression issue.

I apologize I couldn’t get better pics of him as he’s a skittish one haha but yes his fins have some discoloration and they look sort of ripped on the end. There are no other fish in there with him but he still eats as much as possible and I tested my parameters and everything seemed fine!

Duh- that’s right. Ethromyacin for Popeye and such. -M1

When you say parameters are fine, can you provide numbers?
Also, what test kit;a) are you using?

I was in a rush for work this morning so I tested ammonia and nitrate. Ammonia was between 0 and .25 and nitrate was 0. I was using API testing kit since that is what my LFS carries.

Is that the only LFS you have access to?
API is notorious for false readings and have let down many reefers and for a piece of mind a second non-api test would assure the accuracy of your numbers.

Without mechanical damage as a possibility, that leaves a primary bacterial disease as a possibility. This issue can sometimes go away on its own, but to treat would require an antibiotic in a treatment tank. Antibiotics can take up to 3 to 5 days to start working, so you need to keep that in mind as you decide to treat or not.

There is another one about 30 minutes away from me but I believe they only carry API too. What test kit brand would you recommend? I’ll use amazon!

Thank you Jay! The good news is he isn’t scratching or rubbing on anything it’s just he’s twitchy and he’s always hungry lol. So what would you recommend I get? And also a friend told me about peroxide baths. What are your thoughts on that? Thank you.

Hanna or salifert

Don’t get too relaxed yes. As I mentioned, some fish do this out of pure habit but trophants if parasites leave for 2-4 days to reproduce new cysts to return in numbers.
Peroxide baths are hit and miss. For food;
New era pellets
LRS reef frenzy
Spirulina brine shrimp
Mysis shrimp
Formula 1 flake and frozen

Thank you for the input and recommendations! All of this was very helpful to me. I will start all of this ASAP

No - peroxide has limited benefit for treating velvet, but is too difficult to use as an antibiotic.
