Happy new year! It’s been a couple of months since I’ve acclimated and brought in a beautifully healthy looking bubble tip anemone. My clarkii clown hosts and never leaves its side. Just something I figured I’d post here and maybe someone else has experienced this.
This anemone has found a home in a small half cave in the live rock. It’ll go weeks reaching for the lights looking nice and big, the clown fish feeding and keeping hidden in the anemone, everything looks normal. Then every once in a while, the anemone deflates and retreats into the cave, yet the lighting hasn’t changed, The parameters are the same, temp the same. I am just wondering, why? I’ve searched the web, asked around I’ve yet to find an answer. If anyone has any advice and or have experienced this, educate me!

Welcome to R2R! Glad to have you with us. When the nem hides out, how long does it last? When it opens back up, does it look normal? Does the clown leave it alone when it deflates?

It sounds like normal anemone behavior to me. Because they use the same hole for input and output, the only way they can get rid of waste is to expel the fluid on the inside. They will then reinflate with cleaner water.

Thanks for the reply! The anemone looks healthy and will become full every day, just early on I. The mornings when my lights turn on it’ll retreat into the cave, but every day at some point it’s back to being full and taken home by the clown fish.

This is the anemone around 1:30 pm EST today. Again, this morning it was deflated all the way in the cave, but glad I am reading that everything seems normal! Quality isn't the greatest
