Can a Filing cabinet support a tank?

Im just going to put it on my desk, there is an unused plug right near by and I think that will be safer

Omg I’ve been all over the place with tanks. I started with wanting the SCA 50 gallon. But after thinking about it some I was worried about maintenance, specifically water changes on the larger volume.

Next I decided I didn’t really like the idea of a stand because their isn’t much room, so places a stand would fit would be in areas where I wouldn’t be able to easily see it. The whole point of this tank is so I can enjoy it so I decided to put it somewhere I could see. Originally thinking the filing cabinet.

Then I switched to a BioCube 16 or 32 but the measurement of the 32 didn’t fit on top of the filing cabinet, and the 16 I was worried was a little to small for 3 fish. The cube shape was proving hard to find a space for.

So next I was looking for a NUVO. Around this time I posted on here asking about the filing cabinet. After hearing the concerns some had I decided it would be safer to put it on the desk. I was looking at a 25 or 30 and decided bigger is better, so went with the 30

That's the situation with my file cabinet at least. I am certainly not an expert in file cabinets, or how much can they hold. When I was getting a file cabinet for my house, the only thing I was concerned with was, how nice would it be to look at. I have chosen one quickly, and I ordered it from Amazon. I was never thinking about putting my tank on it, my tank has a special, safe place where nothing could ever happen to it. Even if I had some kind of special cabinet, I wouldn't do it...

If you Really wanted to do this, here is the best solution with just a little extra effort:
1. Measure the cabinet
2. make a typical diy stand top out of 2x3.
3. cut ¾ ply to dimensions of cab sides & back plus 2.5" H to match total height w frame on top ..paint/ stain andcscrew into top frame on on back & sides.
4. Cut ¾ ply to fit top frame + 1.5 " w & d to cover tops of ply. Screw into frame
5. Connect back ply corners w painted l brackets. At least 3 each.
6. Trim the front ply edges and top frame front face.
Back ply can be scored ro wall & then take out drawer & screw cab to ply.


Onecstep better would be same except Make a box/frame for each side with 2x3 laying flat against the cabinet. On each side..THEN face with ply.
I just moved about 15 of these from work and if they are quality commercial ones they should hold the weight fine.. The Best point is the drawer shift tho.
I'm doing this temp but mine is shorter door front supply cab & already has wood top.
